“I feel very happy that I could inspire Mr. Albert and Ms. Druyts to make up their CD with improvisations and new works by Mr. Albert. And even more fulfilled with the impressive rhythm of percussions by Remmerie and Albert. And how fascinating it is, the harmony of human voice and wooden marimba!. The sound penetrates into the heart so naturally. The recording technique is so excellent that I believe their play will keep touching our heart forever from now on. So I hope Mr. Ludwig Albert and Ms. Katrine Druyts will get great success and I am looking forward to have the pleasure of listening their beautiful sound again” (by Keiko Abe, JP, 1996).

“Japanese Impressions is impressive. Ludwig Albert, is always searching for new sound combinations. Marimba & soprano is one of them. How fascinating is the harmony of the marimba with the human voice. After a very touching lullaby and a beautiful song of the seashore (remembering the American Home on the range), you will be ready for a discovery to the most surprising variegation of sound and rhythm. The other Japan, far from the beeps of virtual birds and gadgets. This is music of the highest quality” (by Knack weekend magazine BE, February 5, 1997).

“Ludwig Albert, a graduate of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Belgium, has recorded a compact disc featuring arrangements and transcriptions of classical dances for the marimba. Some of the selections are for solo marimba and others employ piano and/or percussion accompaniment. Albert’s motivation for this CD was to increase awareness of the beautiful nuances available on a marimba in the context of familiar literature. He succeeds in giving the listener a view of the marimba’s prowess as a lyrical instrument and diminishing its reputation as only a novelty instrument” (by Lisa Rogers, percussive notes US, 2001).

“Formed after their successful collaboration on the album ‘Japanese Impressions’, the Patrasche trio (marimbist L. Albert, soprano K. Druyts & percussionist G. Remmerie) searched through hundreds of songs of folk and early music from the Low Countries for the musical inspiration for the 11 pieces on this album. The selections are based on a variety of sources that include old Flemish and French folksongs, love songs and lullabies, a 16th-century poem, a 12th century troubadour song, an old Dutch crusader’s song , a chanson de toile of 1240, and the title track ‘Clanck & Sanck’, a medley of Flemish and French folksongs. Inspired by these traditional materials, trio Patrasche, assisted by flutist Adelheid Sieuw, creates a new music, expressed in a variety of styles from selections that recreate the past, such as the chorale heard in ‘Farewell-chorale’, beautifully played by L. Albert on his 5-octaves marimba, and the performance by Albert, Druyts and Sieuw in ‘Belle Doette’, that evokes the music of the Middle Ages, to selections that incorporate improvisation and the latest contemporary music techniques. Albert’s arrangements and the improvisations heard on this disc validate the importance of the artistic stimulation that can result when imaginative musicians draw inspiration from a rich musical heritage” (by John R. Raush, percussive notes US, August 2003).

“Marimba Paraphrases features the marimba performance of Ludwig Albert with special guest performance of Momoko Kamiya. Starting with & Tambourin Paraphrase & for two marimbas by Keiko Abe, this CD has extraordinary clarity and exudes the superb musicianship of Albert. Next is Albert’s own Marimba Moods for 8 mallets that’s correct for 8 mallets! Albert has studied with Abe who performs regularly with six mallets (3 in each hand), but 8 mallet-performance is relatively novel. The piece captures a repeated ostinato, which then melds into an 8 mallet chorale before returning to a more fragmentary motive. Albert’s composition & Fantasy of Love is based on an old Flemish folksong, and he uses leather mallets for a special effect. His sophisticated variation compositional technique permeates the haunting melody of this beautiful composition. Conversation in the forest by Abe, for 2 marimbas, is based on the solo Abe composition 'Prism'. Having recently heard Abe perform 'Prism' live with a quartet for the North Texas University, I must say that Albert's duo performance approaches Abe's intensity and passion. The CD continues with 'A snow white little bird' for six mallets by Flor Verschueren, followed by Albert’s Five scenes on Sakura II. Contemporary techniques such as using the mallets stems on the bars and muting effects makes this Cherry Blossom theme unique. Next comes Let’s Dance for 6 mallets’ by Albert, followed by Wind across mountains for 2 marimbas by Abe. Albert concludes this outstanding CD with two more of his own compositions Dialogue in Nature & Prayer of Mercy chorale, based on another old Flemish folksong: Men Brandt, men Blaekt. This CD is evidence of the tremendous worldwide influence of K. Abe upon contemporary performing marimbists. I am very impressed with the overall excellence and superb musicianship of Ludwig Albert, which comes through on this CD. Albert’s Yamaha 5 octave marimba sounds very warm and even throughout its registers on this CD. Albert is a rising start among marimba performers worldwide- particularly those who perform with 6 or 8 mallets” (by Jim Lambert, Percussive notes US, August 2003, US).

“I was very pleased to listen to this album which includes mainly my duo pieces recorded by Mr. Ludwig Albert who performs with a rich marimba sound. The performance of Katrine Druyts is also added in this CD as a special guest. The combination of her musically rich and attractive voice and Mr. Ludwig’s lyrical marimba approach is very unique and I expect many listeners will enjoy this CD” (by Keiko Abe, JP, June 9, 2006).

“This is a very interesting and varied selection of 27 well known and obscure songs, folk dances, and religious songs using voice and mostly marimba only. If you like the sound of the marimba you will thoroughly enjoy the accompaniment. The songs are alternately lively, romantic, or introspective, with many lyrics based on the poems of Federico Garcia Lorca. The performances are very good. Miss Druyts has an interesting mezzo voice. This is the sound we would expect from Carmen. The marimba playing is outstanding and thoroughly displays the unique sound and wide range of the instrument. The marimba is recorded over the complete stereo soundstage, which allows for amazing clarity. In some of the Mexican songs the marimba is supplemented with percussion instruments. The recording is extremely clear, with a warm sound that enhances the songs. This is a great collection of works from Spain and Mexico for mezzo soprano and marimba. The compositions date from the mid-19th century to the beginning of the 21st century” (by American Record Guide US, August 2014).

“A circa 5 minute marimba solo based on an old Flemish folksong begins in the low register of a 5 octaves marimba with a bass line that features octave leaps down to low D. The folk tune follows, stated simply in a two- voice setting, harmonized in d minor, and accompanied by a bass line moving in Sixteenth note sextuplets. Next the tune is presented in a version in which right- and left hand parts are alternated in guitar like figurations. (two mallets can be used throughout. The middle section features a cadenza, in which the left hand plays an ostinato representing a beating heart (this is a love song, after all), with opportunities to improvise. Albert’s score combines a conservative harmonic/melodic idiom with contemporary concepts of timbre. In regard to the latter, he exploits extreme registers of the instrument and requests a combination of leather and hard rubber mallets, the latter utilized to increase tension in building toward the climactic moment preceding the coda. He also requires that an ascending bass line of five notes can be created in most unusual fashion, by blowing into the resonators. This interesting solo certainly lives up to the definition of “fantasy” as an imaginative piece characterized by distortion of certain musical elements, in this case, modes of tone production. A recording is available on the CD Marimba Paraphrases” (by John R.Raush, percussive notes US, 2004).

“This composition for solo marimba requires four mallets throughout. The solo is through composed and consists of five variations on a Japanese theme, based on free improvisation. A variety of special notations are presented, including arpeggio’s, dead strokes, striking the bars with mallet handles, and assorted trills. The piece takes approximately six minutes to perform, and is expressive and flashy. The composition opens with a six bar introduction consisting of arpeggios that present the pentatonic theme. The themes are developed in a set of brief variations, each enabling the soloist to demonstrate technical and expressive skills. The many contrasting techniques and colors will intrigue audiences” (by George Frock, percussive notes USA, 2004).

“Composed as the repertory piece for the Universal Marimba Competition in 2013, Ludwig Albert describes his work as a “musical challenge reaching a combination of technical virtuosity with powerful sonority.” With each performer continually traversing the full range of a 5.0-octave marimba, encountering time signatures ranging from common time to 27/16, and realizing an extremely wide rhythmic palette, ‘Stratocumulus’ successfully challenges performer and audience in this reflection of a complex cloud structure. No key signature is indicated in the score, but the opening major seventh is an effective precursor for the dissonance and chromatics present in much of this duet, climaxing with minor seconds on opposite ends of the marimba at the end of the piece. Much of the movement between the two parts is contrary, exploiting both extremes of the instrument range consistently. Although a few of the rhythmic combinations will be challenging to execute, much of the writing features unison or complementary rhythmic figures that will be very accessible in the rehearsal process. ‘Stratocumulus’ opens and concludes at an Allegro tempo, but this pulse is interrupted occasionally for brief rubato statements, and the middle of the work features a much more rhythmically sparse chorale passage. Obviously intended for two virtuosic performers, Albert’s work is a beautifully sophisticated and complex duet that effectively exploits the marimba’s range, rhythmic, melodic and harmonic possibilities” (by Josh Gottry, Percussive Notes, May 2014).

‘The marimba duet Stratocumulus by Ludwig Albert was written to be the repertory piece for the 2013 Universal Marimba Competition, and is a virtuosic work for two very advanced players. Each marimbist will jump across the entire range of the instrument the entire time, playing fast and complicated phrases in time signatures like 27/16 . Not for the faint of heart! (by Michael Dooley, Lonestar percussion US, 2014).

The music is just like the sunlight spread over me …. so warm and smoothly! (YouTube)

Wow, tremendous writing by Mr. Albert and used as a dramatic tool in which to create by Mr. Kao. Great work! (YouTube)

“Thank you very much for your ideas and sharing your approach to the marimba fields”.

“Iconic and distinguished Ludwig Albert is unmistakably an icon in the international marimba world. With his own marimba competition, worldwide masterclasses and his self-developed & eight-mallet grip, he has influenced many young players in an particular way”.

“Many thanks, I think your version of ‘Zamba para escuchar tu silencio’ is the best of all I heard!”

“Ludwig Albert is nothing short of miraculous. His performance takes the listener into a new world of Sound and Magic”.

“Albert’s motivation for this CD was to increase awareness of the beautiful nuances available on a marimba. He succeeds in giving the listener a view of the marimba’s prowess as a lyrical instrument and diminishing its reputation as only a “novelty instrument”.

“Ludwig Albert has established a tradition of excellence in advancing the art of marimba performance”.

“Regarding the Belgian Ludwig Albert, it is important to point out that he is considered being one of the superb avant-garde marimbists and belongs to the world summit in the execution of the instrument. He is also recognized for his extensive contributions in the dissemination of the marimba by including visual effects and decorations. Wonderful evening enjoyed by those attending the recital”.

“A big world name of the marimba was presented, the Belgian Ludwig Albert, who can play with 4 baguettes in one hand”.

“Be charmed by the beautiful marimba sounds of the Belgian marimba ambassador Ludwig Albert and his orchestra. Enjoy his virtuosity, his playing pleasure and lyrical sound. Join in on this musical fireworks display and enjoy a wonderful evening of music”.

“Marimba & strings, ice and flame – extremes can contradict and sometimes can complement each other. Coming out of these ideas, Ludwig Albert formed a program thinking that precision of “Flemish marimbas” will balance the endless lyricism of the chamber orchestra, bringing these extremes to a consensus. You have to be a very famous and respected musician in the world in order to have companies produce a marimba and mallets with your signature. Companies compete and musicians collaborate. Novosibirsk was lucky to listen to the tandem of this famous marimba player three times. And every time we leave the concert hall, we say to ourselves: «A striking program»

“Final concert of the Santa Fe Marimba Festival. Not to be missed marimba virtuoso Ludwig Albert – European super star. Never before in Santa Fe has there been a concert like this featuring stellar international marimbist performing music rarely heard anywhere”.

“Great concert in Sint Truiden with the Chamber Orchestra from Novosibirsk with our excellent Ludwig Albert !! – Congrats!”

“Wonderful evening enjoyed by those attending the recital. What a lyricism and professional drive”.

“Ludwig Albert is a new kind of classical artist, thoughtful, multi-talented and confident. With the debut radio single the Silence in Space, running up the charts, Ludwig Albert is in a unique position to re define the genre. Generally speaking, classical artists are highly dependent on relentless commitment and strong musical instincts to succeed in the market, and Ludwig Albert is well positioned to excel in this regard. Now that the mesmerizing new radio single “The Silence in Space” is catching fire on radio stations abroad, it’s clear that we’ll be hearing a lot more of Ludwig Albert. Method Reviews

“In the summer of 2006, when I decided to participate in Ludwig Albert Marimba Academy, I didn’t know that my way of playing marimba would take such a remarkable turn. I have already participated in several master classes with renowned names in the marimba world, but I’ve never seen marimba with such a clear and objective technique as the one I’ve found with professor Ludwig Albert’s approach. The way movement helps in understanding musical sentences and nuances, as well as in the musicality of an interpretation makes all sense, and it will be certainly an historical mark in marimba’s world helping future marimba players to really heighten this amazing instrument.”

“Prof. Ludwig Albert’s method is very helpful to make to groove and phrase the music. When I started to study marimba with Prof Albert, I knew that I played every piece too fast and with a flat interpretation. After 4 years of study, I understand what kind of groove or phrasing is needed and to come forward to the composer’s expectations in musical interpretations”.

“It is with utmost certainty that my immense passion and love for the marimba would not have grown without the kind, gentle and passionate musical guidance of Mr. Albert. Never afraid of a challenge, he demonstrated how the application of every movement, facial expression and breath played an integral part of every piece of music. I consider myself truly lucky to have encountered his great musical philosophy full of both natural dramatically and contrasting movements. It is my wish that any student, dreaming of becoming a marimba performer, have the opportunity to encounter Ludwig’s magical techniques and that his teachings be shared around the world.”

I consider Ludwig Albert’s method as significant for every marimbist who wish to discover different sound colors on the marimba. This method introduce a diversity of important ways in playing marimba. Apart from the sound varieties which enriches the knowledge and expand the performing abilities, one can learn how to achieve a freedom in body movement and simply enjoy playing music without any tension.

“Professor Albert showed me the sonic richness of the marimba. He teaches the importance of ‘body’ movement to achieve a good sound. Since then, I was aware of this and was looking for the best sound and the largest number of sonic possibilities that I could offer as an interpreter. His advices helped me to discover a new world of sounds that today enriches all my interpretations. I deeply appreciate all his advices and that I had the opportunity to hear his ideas and creativity.”

“Albert’s method reach a decent sonority by incorporated and optimal body movement. His method is based on his musical approach and personal experiences. The clear definition of 59 strokes can be applied in a lyrical performance. Surely this method is the one also to have in the pocket.”

“Mr. Albert’s approach to develop an optimal sound and musicality through movement helped me in all the possible ways that I could think of. I’ve arrived to improve my sound, my technique and my musicality in levels that I wouldn’t even imagine before I’ve got to work with his approach. For me personally, it was also really amusing, because from the very beginning the method is very practical and based in musical concepts. Even when I just started working in really easy pieces and really basic exercises, I was playing music, and even more important; I was thinking about the music and not just its technical aspect. Through, movements, through phrasings, through coloring, through singing, this is what was all about ; ‘playing music’. This method showed me a whole new world of possibilities, opening an infinite pat of creativeness, autonomy and constant development. The concept which mostly helped me from the method, is that I didn’t learn only ‘how’ to move, or ‘how’ to phrase in sudden specific pieces; but -even more important- I learned ‘why’ I may move or not in a sudden moment, or ‘why’ I may phrase or not one sudden section. Based on this idea, I believe that this method works for players from all levels and all cultural background because it gives the tools and the scientific information to help each one progress in his way and based in his musical needs. Mr. Albert’s approach simply changed my life!”

Dr. Ludwig Albert’s innovative research is now available in this excellent book, ‘place book title here’. He has proven, using both subjective and objective research, that moving and using the entire body affects the sounds and tonal colors that can be made by marimbists. Mallets, grips, stroke types and descriptions of body movements are included. This visionary work is moving marimba performance from a singular focus on sticking patterns and basic technical execution to a higher level of serious musicianship and sophisticated musical interpretation. Highly recommended!”

“I will never forget the 2 years marimba training I had in Leuven with Prof. Ludwig Albert. The mallet grip techniques, the method of body and stroke movements (40+ different strokes), the way to create various marimba sounds he taught, helped me take a big step forward towards better marimba performance, and also shaped my own sound through body controlled movement. His passion for performance, deep knowledge, and mastery of instrumental technique opened my eyes and inspired me to think outside the box without limit. His continuous support over the past two years has been priceless and has given me a better sense of direction in both my life and career. I offer my sincere gratitude to him.”

“Ludwig Albert’s method of movement in marimba playing had a pivotal impact on my professional career as a percussion artist. Thanks to this method my marimba phrasing started to be fluent, my sound control and quality of the sound improved significantly. I can’t imagine performing without a knowledge of this method anymore.”

“The Movin’grips method approach enables the performer to express precise musical expressions and profound sounds. Hence, this text will provide a great direction for students learning marimba. I believe by reading this book, students can further develop and enhance their musical potential.”

“It is the path I have been looking for since I play marimba, a written diary about body movements and strokes to go into the sound, experiment it and play with it.”

“As a former student of the author and developer of the method, I had the opportunity to learn this method from the inside with a lot of insights. Throughout these years and now in my professional life, Movin’grips are programmed in my body. This method has changed the way I create the sound on the instrument, the way I move in function of music and has remarkably enriched my musicality and body language in general. I can apply it not only on marimba, but also on other percussion instruments and the benefits and possibilities of the sound production are endless. Movin’grips gave me complete freedom!”

“The movement approach helped us explore all different sonorous possibilities of the marimba. It gives us freedom in expressing the full, rich sound spectrum of the instrument, while performing.”

“Reading Movin’grips is how I plan to celebrate the birthday of the amazing Ludwig Albert today! You are such a great inspiration and I am so grateful for all the wisdom you’ve been sharing with me.”

“I already knew of high level of percussion students from your class as I had chance to meet some of them in the past as well as to witness your expertise in marimba performance during international festivals and competitions in Argentina, Croatia, Italy, Slovenia, Spain, USA…to name only few countries out of many. At the same time, your contribution to further international promotion of Belgian percussion music by organizing International Marimba Academy and Marimba Universal Competition in St. Truiden for so many years is simply indispensable and shows why your international status of renowned pedagogue, performer and organizer is well deserved. As an active international soloist and pedagogue I learned how difficult it might be to bring to life such important and successful international percussion events. Therefore, allow me to express my strongest support to your future efforts in continuing such great work.”

“As the generation of marimbists is getting on the move across the world, here in Belgium, it is my great pleasure to support Ludwig Albert to substantiate such an event like this. Congratulations from my deepest heart. I believe today’s marimba world is in the middle of the musical growth process, waiting for the future. I feel that pieces which can grasp people’s hearts and players who can inspire the audience through their performance are needed. I am looking forward to seeing how this Belgium competition under the supervision of Ludwig Albert will be evaluated in the future ward long history of the marimba.”

“Province Limburg, and in particular the city of St. Truiden, are very proud to once again host this high quality marimba festival and accompanying international competition. Under the direction of artistic director Ludwig Albert, who is also a virtuoso on the marimba, each edition will once again become a worldwide acclaimed success. Just the fact that the entire international marimba scene is gathered here to learn from each other, share experiences and enjoy each other’s music gives this event an important added value. Friendships forged here last a lifetime. And if soon the musicians, in their own way, manage to conquer the hearts of the public, then I am convinced that with the rise of the solo instrument marimba, this festival will undoubtedly register itself in history.”
