Unique Orchestral Projects
Creating Great Music Experiences
Over 35 years, Ludwig Albert performed in distinguished venues such as the National Centre of performing arts in Seoul and Shanghai, the world premieres, Live TV broadcasts and extra concerts of his highlighting Concerto “THE UNIUVERSE”. The latest co composing Concerto “PERMAFROST” is world premiered at the prestigious int. Competition in Jeju Korea and is since handled as set pieces of several competitions abroad. Both awarded Concertos, presented for marimba solo, duo & trio with Orchestra in different strengths from Percussion 0rchestra up to Symphony 0rchestra, are struck by their extra ordinarily high level, based on improvisations, although the dominant role is reserved for the concert marimba, especially played as well with 4 to 6 mallets and effect slap mallets, in contrast with the harmonies of the Orchestra. Exciting passages reaches a climax as the full weight of the symphony Orchestra, performing energetic rhythms, joins with the marimba in producing dramatic sessions with a dominant role of the percussion. These concertos are a unique and true showcase of Alberts acclaimed sonority and musicality, from creative power to sensitive virtuosity, an intense dialogue between the marimba soloists and the orchestra, a wealth of orchestral nuances, strong beautiful themes and rhythmic elements, a fusion of contrasting elements in a final apotheosis.

The extra-ordinary cooperation of both marimbists and composers Ludwig Albert & Rodrigo Fernandes Marques resulted in the splendid co composed Concerto ‘Permafrost’. They decided in April 2020 during the COVID 19 lockdown to compose a new concerto inspired by the Permafrost, to combine their musical ideas and sharing it to the World. The marimba is placed on the foreground and goes in an intense dialogue with the Orchestra. Permafrost is a unique combination of creative power and sensitive virtuosity displaying the marimba’s technical and sonorous qualities, supported by the Orchestra’s wealth of nuances. This concerto includes three movements: The 1 st movement reflects to the ‘Taliks’ or unfrozen grounds in a permafrost environment. After a grave introduction, a playful waltz with string accents transcends this movement merging with the soloist and the full orchestra. The cantabile cadenza for the marimba provides a bridge to the final section that turns into a powerful maestoso ¾ waltz with a strong presented theme, reflecting to the imaginative surrounded permafrost landscape. The 2nd movements’ passionate themes reflect to the ‘Aufeis’ sheet-like mass of layered ice forming a permanent river and show the marimba in all its sensitive qualities. The beautiful themes are introduced by the marimba and melt together with the full orchestra until the dreamy end, as a transition to the 3 rd movement, reminding us with the image of the ‘Pleistocene’; the most intense period of the geological ice age with its hidden archeologic discoveries. Simultaneously it also warns us of how global heating affects natural disasters and eventually can awake Earth’s forgotten or preserved pathogens that might pose a potential threat to and reinfect humanity. Strong themes and rhythmicelements overlap each other in the first part played by the marimba with 6 mallets and special effect slap mallets. An intense adagio with all melodies before and a full fusion of the soloist and the orchestra provides a bridge to the powerful rhythmic finale, involving all fusing contrasting elements in a final apotheosis, and leaving us with the beautiful permafrost scenery and a hopeful plead for its preservation.

Ludwig Albert shaped his talent and specialized for marimba solo with the legendary Japanese marimba pioneer and -virtuoso Keiko Abe and performed with her since 1996 several concert tours. He recorded also Abe’s masterworks, released on the albums “Marimba Waves” and “L.Albert plays K.Abe” (2024). International reviewed as the successor of Keiko Abe by his extraordinary lyrical sound, Albert belongs in the world with the absolute topflight of marimbists. “Prism Rhapsody” is the only marimba-concerto composed by Keiko Abe. This concerto can be performed in solo version by Ludwig Albert or in duo version together with duo guest Rodrigo Fernandes.
